What is the Care Certificate? The Care Certificate was introduced on the 1st April 2015 and became mandatory, following the recommendations of the Cavendish Report 2013, and from this point forward all new care workers must have completed this qualification within 12 weeks of starting their new role within the care industry. It is a set of standards that social care and health workers stick to in their daily working life.
Who should take this course? Anyone starting work in the health or social care sectors should complete the certificate, including health care assistants, assistant practitioners, care support workers, adult social care workers providing direct care in residential and nursing homes and hospices and home care workers.

What does it cover?
This course not only covers training content of the 15 standards that make up the complete knowledge requirement of the Care Certificate, but also helps staff compile the portfolio of evidence required to obtain the certificate. How does the Care Certificate works?
There’s two parts to the Care Certificate:
- Training (at our Academy or at your premises) – Our experts led
- Demonstrating competence at work – Your staff supervisor / mentor or manager led (sign off)
Key benefits include:
- On site assessment and supervision of staff whilst carrying out their duties marking learner workbooks and providing constructive feedback and support
- Distance learning options where units are not able to be completed in the workplace
- 5 day Accredited training that cover all the units. Ideal for larger companies with regularly more than 10 staff to induct every three months.
Each situation is unique, for an accurate quote of costs call with your specific details.
The Care Certificate workbook is a free downloadable resource to support the training process and help you and your new workers cover parts of the Care Certificate. There is a workbook for each standard supported by an introduction and glossary. Each standard includes knowledge content and ends with a section where learners can record their understanding.
Introduction – Care Certificate workbook
Use of the Care Certificate workbook is optional
The use of the workbook is optional and you might want to adapt or develop your own materials to meet the standards. You can choose to incorporate some or all of the workbook into your induction programmes.
The Care Certificate workbook is not available in a hard copy format. This is to ensure the resource can be produced and maintained free of charge. We have not received any funding to produce hard copies – should there be significant employer demand, we would consider introducing this as a priced publication.
Saving this evidence
The assessments in these workbooks have answer fields you can fill in electronically. If the workbooks are filled in on a computer they can be saved using ‘save as’. Learners should be encouraged to save their work and share with you. You may wish to save this alongside your other staff records.

The duration can vary from organisation to organisation, and may depend upon a range of factors: the hours worked by the learner, teaching methods chosen, previous educational achievement, resources and opportunities for assessment, the availability of assessors in work place.
