General Business English Course
You’ve got your shiny new job offer from a multinational company, ready and set for the corporate world. You buy your obligatory Starbucks on your way to work, and have bragged about it on LinkedIn for the zenith time. Seems like the perfect life personified, isn’t it? But wait, the story is not over. The first day ends in a nightmare. Everyone in the office talks in different accents. Your supervisor chastises you for not being ‘clear and precise enough in your prose’, pointing indignantly at the emails and reports you’ve written. You cannot focus, nor contribute, during meetings, since everyone is speaking as if their mouths got transformed into machine guns in a massacre. You can hardly wait for your turn to speak.
Or this. You’ve just taken your obligatory picture in front of your university building, clad in your shimmering graduation gown. Your parents are super proud of you. Your degree certificate represents the hard work you’ve devoted to your studies for the past few years. All seems good with the world. Until the job search commences, when you realise that your CV and cover letter might not be up to scratch. Or worse, you fidget because your English is insufficient to meet the demands of strict interviewers during job interviews.
Don’t worry. Our English language specialists here at London Waterloo Academy are here to help. The General Business English Course is designed to (1) get you a job; and (2) help you thrive in one.
The tutor will provide you with all necessary course materials.

Course Content:
This course differs from General English in that it features a more ‘active’ component. Learners are required to perform regular writing tasks. Moreover, lessons are designed to be more interactive, in which learners work in groups to complete tasks based on scenarios commonly encountered in the workplace.
- Writing Clinic: learners are given written assignments to be completed and marked in subsequent lessons; these writing assignments are based on tasks which are ubiquitous in all professional settings. They may take the form of business emails, reports or meeting minutes;
- CV Workshop: Some lessons on the course are designated CV Workshops in which learners will be taught ways to improve on their CVs. Moreover, CV samples are proffered in-class for in-depth analysis;
- Speak Up!: This component focuses on, as the name suggests, oral English. Learners will be invited to form small groups to complete tasks. Such tasks can take the form of (1) boardroom meetings which require everyone to brainstorm and contribute; (2) official presentations on designated topics, where learners are given pertinent information beforehand; or (3) role-playing exercises (e.g. service provider/client).
- LinkedIn Focus: Social media platforms are paramount in this day and age. Therefore, they will be the focus of some lessons, where learners will be taught how to write social media posts and comments in effective prose. Learners are also taught language techniques, supplemented with illustrative examples, to improve their LinkedIn profiles (or professional profiles associated with other social media platforms).
