Speaking is a tricky part of language learning. Apart from sound grammar and appropriate vocabulary, one must also observe dialectal words, pronunciation rules, and the myriads of varieties of the language spoken across the oceans, especially for a language as complicated and varied as English.

London Waterloo Academy now proffers you the unique opportunity to ‘unveil’ the mystical side of English, guiding you to complete oral fluency.

Lesson Organisation:

– There are two lessons per week, each lasting for 2 hours (provisional schedule: Thursday and Friday 18:30-20:30); this course provisionally lasts for 10 weeks;

– The Thursday lesson is held via Zoom and focuses on pronunciation rules, accents, and tone; the Friday lesson is classroom-based. It is, needless to say, more interactive – an optimal opportunity for you to apply what you have learnt on Thursday by engaging in intellectually stimulating activities with your peers. All in English, of course!

– In terms of pronunciation and accent, the teacher will take heed of the individual needs of learners. Although British English will ‘loom large’ in learning materials and actual lessons, the teacher will also guide learners to comprehending accents from all around the world. This reflects the Academy’s focus on diversity and internationalism, preparing learners thus for opportunities not merely inside the UK, but out and beyond!

– (Provisional) Friday classes are divided into two parts: (a) functional; and (b) professional. Part (a) focuses on daily interactions, e.g. purchasing goods from stores, liaising with public services, etc. This equips learners with the right linguistic tools to tackle the challenges they often encounter living in the UK. Part (b) is geared towards professional situations, including but not limited to: giving professional presentations, interactions during professional meetings and conferences, and socialising with colleagues. This offers our learners a comprehensive view of the linguistic features demanded for in various situations, hence conducive to both personal and professional success.

Mode of study – Hybrid. There are 2 lessons per week, where one lesson will be delivered on Zoom and another in the classroom.
Duration: 10 weeks, 4 hours per week

Learning Objectives:

 1. To be acquainted with linguistic features of spoken English, e.g. phrasal verbs, common English slang, idioms, etc;

 2. To compare, differentiate, and apply the aforementioned linguistic features to different situations, both personal and professional; this is facilitated by learning activities in the Friday ‘application’ class, e.g. role-playing;

 3. To improve the learner’s English pronunciation, and ‘accent removal’ (removing a learner’s perceived non-native accent for a smoother transition to British life);

 4. To learn more about the concept of ‘tone’, thereby applying it in daily life to improve confidence in English speech;

 5. To render one more aware of dialectal differences in English, so as to improve the learner’s capability to understand different English accents, and communicate with a greater cohort of English-speaking individuals.’
