It’s Never Too Late to Start Again: How Adults Across London Are Building a New Career in Dental Nursing

If you’ve ever sat at your desk, or stood behind a till, or scrolled through job listings at midnight wondering “is this really it?” — we want you to know something: it is not too late. It is never too late. Every single week at London Waterloo Academy, we welcome adults who are doing exactly what you might be considering right now — walking away from a job that no longer fits, and walking into a classroom to start again.

Quick answer: London Waterloo Academy’s NEBDN Level 3 Dental Nursing Diploma is a one-year, part-time course open to adults of any age and background, with no previous dental experience required. Classes run in the evenings and on Saturdays, students earn while they train in paid placements (approximately £11.82–£12.25 per hour), and the course leads directly to GDC registration as a qualified Dental Nurse. Four 2026 intakes are available: 20 June,  15 September, 26 September, and 14 October, at our Central London campus at The Foundry, 156 Blackfriars Road, SE1 8EN.

You Are Not Too Old, Too Late, or Too Far Behind

We hear it all the time: “I’m 35, is this even possible?” “I’ve never worked in healthcare before.” “I’ve got a family, a mortgage, a full-time job — how could I possibly retrain?”

Here is the truth: our students are teachers who wanted more purpose, retail managers who wanted stability, parents returning to work after years at home, and people simply tired of jobs that never felt like theirs. Dental nursing does not ask where you have been. It only asks whether you are ready to move forward.

Why Dental Nursing Is the Career Reset So Many Adults Are Choosing

A Real Qualification, Not Just a Certificate

Our NEBDN Level 3 Diploma in Dental Nursing is GDC-recognised, NEBDN-accredited, and regulated by Ofqual — a genuine, respected qualification that opens the door to registration with the General Dental Council, the official regulator for dental professionals across the UK.

Earn While You Learn

This is not a course you pause your life for. Students work a minimum of 16 hours a week in paid trainee placements throughout their training, earning in the region of £11.82–£12.25 per hour, rising toward £23,918–£39,000+ a year once qualified. You are building your future and your bank balance at the same time.

Built Around Real, Busy Lives

We teach once a week — evenings from 6:30pm–8:30pm, or every-other-Saturday from 10am–2pm — because we know career changers are also parents, partners, carers, and full-time employees. You do not need to quit your life to start a new one.

No Experience? No Problem

Whether you left school years ago, spent a decade in an unrelated industry, or are already working front-of-house in a dental practice without formal qualification, our A-to-Z curriculum takes you from zero to GDC registration in one year.

Learn From People Who Live This Work

Every class is taught by practising dentists, NEBDN examiners, and experienced dental tutors — not generalist lecturers. You are learning the profession from the people actually shaping it.

A Support System, Not Just a Syllabus

From your first enquiry to your graduation ceremony, you get free one-to-one support whenever you need it. Career changes can feel isolating — we make sure yours never does.

What a Career in Dental Nursing Actually Gives You

  • Stability — dental nursing is a profession in genuine, growing demand across NHS and private practice.
  • Purpose — you’ll help anxious patients feel calm, assist in life-changing procedures, and be part of a healthcare team every single day.
  • Progression — qualified dental nurses can move on to become dental hygienists, practice managers, oral health educators, or team leaders.
  • A fresh identity — not “the person who used to do X,” but a qualified healthcare professional with a GDC registration to prove it.

Is This Your Sign to Finally Do It?

If you’re nodding along — if some part of you has been quietly waiting for permission to make a change — this is it. You don’t need to have it all figured out. You just need to take the first step: register your interest, ask a question, or book our £50 one-day Introduction to Dental Nursing taster session to see if this path feels right before you commit to anything.
