“Lost in Translation”: Trainee Dental Nurses often work with patients from diverse backgrounds. On one occasion, a trainee dental nurse was trying to explain the need for a specific dental treatment to a patient who had limited English proficiency. In an attempt to communicate, the trainee used hand gestures and simple words. However, due to a misunderstanding, the patient thought they were being asked to perform a dance routine. The patient enthusiastically started dancing in the dental chair, much to the amusement of the entire dental team 🙂
This incident not only showcased the trainee’s resourcefulness and willingness to communicate in creative ways but also highlighted the importance of cultural sensitivity and effective communication in the dental care setting.
